Netflix has acquired the rights to a highly acclaimed 3-part historical Western series starring Kevin Costner, which is set to be released in the United States in April 2023.
The series portrays a bitter blood feud between two families on the West Virginia / Kentucky border during the aftermath of the Civil War and is described as a historical docu-drama western.
The series originally aired on the History Channel in 2012, with Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton in the lead roles of Anse Hatfield and Randal McCoy, respectively. Other notable stars in the cast included Matt Barr, Tom Berenger, Powers Boothe, Jena Malone, Boyd Holbrook, Noel Fisher, and Sam Reid. The show received critical acclaim and swept the Primetime Emmys with five awards, including an acting award for Kevin Costner.
Although the series originally aired on History Channel, it is now being licensed to Netflix from Sony Pictures Television and ThinkFactory Media. Sony Pictures Television is one of the few distributors still licensing older content to Netflix US, as most other distributors have made their older series exclusive to their own streaming services.
Yellowstone star Kevin Costner’s involvement in the series makes it a highly sought-after acquisition for Netflix, especially given the lack of shows similar to Yellowstone. Yellowstone has become one of the most popular shows on television and streams on Peacock in the United States. Its popularity has led to an entire universe of shows being developed. Although Yellowstone is not available on Netflix anywhere in the world, the acquisition of this highly acclaimed historical Western series will help fill the gap in Netflix’s offerings.
