We all remember him, especially the kids from the late 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. We remember him as Rick O’Connell from the Mummy, Link from Encino Man, Mortimer Folchart from Inkheart, Elliot Richards from Bedazzled, and George from George of the Jungle. I am of course discussing Brendan Fraser, he was a staple in Hollywood for a good long while. He went from comic relief to leading man, and for a while, things were looking good.
However, in those day and those days I mean the early 00s, Hollywood was a self-serving machine, one which chewed up and spat out actors going against the wind to stand up for themselves. The same tragic incident took place in this icon’s life. In 2018 Brendan Fraser mustered the courage to share that he was assaulted in 2003 by HFPA’s former President, Philip Berk, who had groped him at an event. Now, though Mr. Berk and his representatives have denied that the sexual harassment had ever taken place, he has admitted that there was an apology letter written to Brendan on the former president’s behalf.
After all that, the once fame kissed star stepped away from the limelight to try and come to terms with his trauma. He was made into the butt of jokes and memes across the world. Some thought he had stepped away because of his weight, and others said he was washed up. But lo and behold in 2023 Brendan James Fraser was nominated for best actor in his performance in the movie Whale.
A story about an obese English teacher looking to connect with his estranged daughter: it is a story that tugs the heartstrings and reminds movie-goers why they fell in love with Brendan all those years ago. We, for one, do hope the actors get the Oscar because he sure as hell deserves it.
