I still remember it was a Sunday afternoon in 2002 when I first saw an episode of One Piece, it had already been on air for five years and I can still vividly remember how hooked I was. In fact I got so hooked that even now at 30, I still wait for every episode that airs on Sunday.
Known as “Mugiwara no Luffy” Straw Hat Luffy to his enemies, “Kyaputen” Captain to some of his friends and simply Luffy to his immediate crew, he is the main protagonist of One Piece. The anime follows Luffy whose ultimate goal is to become “kaizokuō ni ore wa naru” or as it’s said in English “I’m gonna be king of the pirates”. We follow his journey from humble beginnings as he gathers a crew, fights the navy and pirates alike and even the loss of Ace (one of the best characters in OP) all the way to now, all the way to the Wano Arc.
The audience of One Piece has literally grown up with the show, they (including this humble writer) have followed the boisterous character through every arc through every loss, every victory, and every wave he has ridden. There is a sense of comradery many watchers have developed with not only the show in general but the many loveable characters as well. Now only two or three years before Oda finishes the manga, streaming giant Netflix has partnered with Shueisha and Tomorrow Studios to produce a ten episode live-action series on the ever popular anime. However, there are doubts, we saw what has been done with live-action versions of Dragon ball Z, Death Note, and Bleach and it is with a heavy heart that I say that the movies did not live up to the anime or manga. Having watched all of them I can give you a firsthand account of the fact that the only thing you’ll feel after watching the live-action versions is a disappointment.

I hope the same is not done with One Piece, as the anime is near and dear to many hearts. That being said I am, as I am sure many fans are tingling with excitement to see the characters brought to life. Personally, I cannot wait to see the moss-headed menace, the soon to be the greatest swordsman in the world Roronoa Zoro be brought to life by the talented Mackenyu.
