Paramount+ and Paramount Television Studios are working together on a live-action adaptation of a sci-fi parody movie from 1999. The project is in its initial stages of development and they are searching for a writer to collaborate with Mark Johnson, who was the executive producer of the original film and is now returning for the update. Currently, the only executives involved with the project are Johnson and his production company, Gran Via Productions.
Nicole Clemens and representatives from Paramount Television Studios and Paramount+ declined to offer a statement.
Galaxy Quest was previously attempted to be adapted for television by Paramount TV Studios. In 2015, the studio created a new version of the show, which followed the storyline of the movie about a group of actors from a canceled space TV show. Amazon purchased the series and hired the film’s writer, Robert Gordon, as the scriptwriter. Johnson and director Dean Parisot were also involved in the project, but it never progressed beyond the development stage.
Paul Scheer took over writing the script from Gordon for Paramount TV Studios and Amazon two years later. Plans for the Amazon take were put on hold due to Rickman’s death. Tim Allen was also unavailable due to Last Man Standing and scheduling conflicts. Filling Alan Rickman’s void was challenging. In April 2016, Rockwell stated that the project would start shooting soon. Allen mentioned that the revival was close to being resurrected but without Alan, who had passed away, causing a shock.
The Galaxy Quest update on Amazon is currently inactive and Paramount TV Studios is searching for a writer to revive the project for their streaming platform, Paramount+. It is worth noting that this platform also hosts Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek universe, which shares a similar genre with Galaxy Quest.
Johnson holds an all-encompassing agreement with AMC Studios and is presently supervising the Anne Rice franchise for the cable network. His works comprise Interview With the Vampire, Mayfair Witches, Lucky Hank, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Halt and Catch Fire. His legal representation is Ziffren Brittenham.
