Just two days after she had attended the Golden Globes with her mother Priscilla Presley to support the actor playing her father, Lisa Marie Presley, has died. She was rushed to the hospital after CPR had to be performed twice; once by the paramedics on the way and once before that by her ex-husband, Danny Keough, who had been living with her at the time.
“Priscilla Presley and the Presley family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Lisa Marie,” reads a family statement.
“They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.” A representative said.
On January 10th both Lisa and her mother Priscilla were at the Golden Globes to support Austin Butler who had portrayed the King of Pop in “Elvis” for which he had also won best lead actor in a drama. Before the Globes she attended a pre-globes party for what would have been Elvis Presley’s 88th birthday.
“I am so overwhelmed by this film and the effect that it’s had and what Austin’s done. I’m so proud. I know that my father would also be very proud,” Lisa Marie said at the event.
The only child of Elvis Presley and the former Priscilla Beaulieu, Lisa Marie was born exactly nine months after the marriage of Elvis Presley to Priscilla, who met the King of Rock ‘n Roll at age 14. Lisa Marie dealt with a lot in her life. At age 5 she saw the divorce of her parents, then four years later when she was 9, her father died. After that, times got even darker for her when she started abusing drugs, even telling Playboy magazine in an interview that her mother’s boyfriend had touched her inappropriately. Later on in life she would face something no parent would want to, the death of her child. Benjamin Keough died in 2020 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
She was no stranger to the limelight either, but then again, it can be expected from a woman that came from such famous parents. She was a continuous fixture in the tabloids, for marriages to individuals like Michael Jackson & Nicholas Cage as well as her complete embrace of Scientology, which she said saved her from her vices. However, melancholy is not the only thing she had in her life, Lisa, like her father also had a musical career, and though it never reached his heights she did shine bright. She released her first album titled “To Whom It May Concern,” in 2003 with “Lights Out” certifying gold marking sales of more than 500,000 units, becoming a massive hit. For her second album “Now What,” she chose to co-write 10 songs which included a cover of the Ramones’ “Here Today and Gone Tomorrow.” Both of these albums were released by Capitol Records and debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200. Her third album, however, was released by Republic records with Simon Fuller’s XIX Recordings. She even performed her single “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet,” at Memphis’ legendary Sun Studios, a studio where her father had famously recorded. This album titled “Strom and Grace” was produced by Roots rocker T Bone Burnett and got raving reviews. She even collaborated with Pat Benatar on the song “Heartbreaker” at the VH1 Divas Duets benefit. She then even performed a “duet” with her father on “In the Ghetto,” which Elvis Presley had originally released in 1969.
After the death of her father Lisa Marie inherited Graceland and then inherited Elvis Presley’s entire estate when she turned 25. She chose to sell 85% of the estate, which had an estimated value of $100 million when she inherited it, keeping control of Graceland.
